Instagram has been hiding photos and videos that it considers to be vaguely \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2019\/04\/remove-reduce-inform-new-steps\/\">inappropriate<\/a>\u201d without explaining what specific kind of content that includes or alerting affected users. Such posts are algorithmically blocked from being featured in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/impact\/topic\/facebook\">Facebook<\/a>-owned website\u2019s public <a href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/613868662393739\">Explore<\/a> and hashtag pages, which help grow people\u2019s accounts by giving them broader exposure. This kind of covert censorship, known as \u201cshadow banning,\u201d has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/instagram-shadow-ban-sexist_n_5cc72935e4b0537911491a4f\">disproportionately affected women<\/a> and members of marginalized communities, including those whose livelihoods depend on Instagram \u2014 leaving many urgently seeking ways to restore their visibility on the platform. Instagram initially denied it. But, what does research tell us? <a href=\"https:\/\/asistdl.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/meet.14505001116\">Guess Who<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research suggests that females tend to have a higher success rate in detecting gender deception, and males tend to have higher self-efficacy beliefs in gender deception.
