A massive controlled experiment of web users found that such ratings are highly susceptible to irrational \u201cherd behavior\u201d \u2014 and that the herd can be manipulated. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/technology\/2013\/08\/why-you-shouldn%E2%80%99t-trust-internet-comments\">ScienceNOW reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the crowd really is wiser than you, especially when it comes to the average of many people\u2019s choices. But what if you\u2019re judging something like quality?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to one theory, the wisdom of the crowd still holds \u2014 measuring the aggregate of people\u2019s opinions produces a stable, reliable value. Skeptics, however, argue that people\u2019s opinions are easily swayed by those of others\u2026<\/p>\n<p>To test which hypothesis is true, you would need to manipulate huge numbers of people, exposing them to false information and determining how it affects their opinions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A team led by <a href=\"http:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/faculty\/detail.php?in_spseqno=19289\">MIT\u2019s Sinan Aral<\/a> conducted an experiment using a website that aggregates news stories, where users make comments and vote others up or down \u2014 like Reddit though he won\u2019t say which exactly.
